Seattle Area Minimum Wage 2026: Eight Different Floors in One Metro

SEATTLE, WA — Step off the curb on Roxbury Street in West Seattle. On the north sidewalk the lowest wage an employer can legally pay you is $21.30 an hour. On the south sidewalk, in White Center, it can be $18.32. Same street, same bus stop, nearly three dollars an hour apart, decided entirely by which side of the pavement your time clock sits on.

The Seattle metro has more overlapping minimum wage laws than any other region in the country – eight separate legal floors inside a 30-mile drive. Knowing which one covers the address on your offer letter is worth real money, and the 2027 numbers land in eight days.

💵 Eight Floors, One Metro

Washington's statewide minimum wage is $17.13 an hour in 2026, already the highest state floor in the nation. Around Puget Sound most workers never touch it, because seven local governments have stacked higher rates on top. Where each stands today, per the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries:

Read the top line twice. Seattle gets the headlines, but Seattle is fourth. Tukwila carries the highest local minimum wage in Washington.

Where the Lines Actually Fall

These are not abstract boundaries. They run through places you already drive past.

Westfield Southcenter sits in Tukwila, so every retail job, food court counter and stockroom shift in that mall carries a $21.65 floor. Cross Interstate 5 onto International Boulevard and you are in SeaTac, where the $20.74 rate reaches hospitality and transportation employers only. A SeaTac warehouse or office job falls back to the state's $17.13.

White Center and Skyway are unincorporated King County, wedged between Seattle and Renton with no city of their own. That puts them on the county's four-bracket schedule, where a small shop under $2 million in revenue can legally pay $18.32 while an identical shop a few blocks north in Seattle owes $21.30.

Renton and Burien exempt their smallest employers outright. A Burien business with 20 or fewer workers drops to the state rate, a $4.50 gap between two storefronts on Ambaum Boulevard. Everett, over the Snohomish County line, runs the slowest schedule: mid-size employers stepped from $18.77 to $19.77 on July 1, and shops with 14 or fewer workers are untouched.

⚠️ The Rule That Decides Your Paycheck

The address where you perform the work sets your legal floor. Not where you live, not where the company is headquartered. A chain with corporate offices in Bellevue still owes the Tukwila rate for hours worked at its Southcenter store. Live in Seattle and commute to a job in unincorporated King County and you are on the county's schedule, not Seattle's.

For drivers and anyone splitting a shift across sites, hours are generally counted where they happened. Two hours in Seattle and six in SeaTac are not one blended rate. If your employer runs a single number across city lines, ask before it becomes a back-pay claim.

Seattle workers who think they have been shorted can reach the city's Office of Labor Standards at (206) 256-5297, which takes walk-in intake Tuesday through Thursday at 810 3rd Avenue, Suite 375. Every other jurisdiction administers its own ordinance through its city government.

What Changes on September 30

Washington sets the next year's state minimum wage every September 30, effective January 1, which puts that announcement eight days out. Seattle's Office of Labor Standards publishes its own 2027 figure in the fall, tied to the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue CPI-W, and the other cities follow with indexed adjustments of their own.

None of the 2027 numbers are public yet, so treat anyone quoting one today as guessing. Only the direction is safe: these floors have risen every January for years, and the gaps between jurisdictions have widened rather than closed.

Which minimum wage applies if I live in Seattle but work in Tukwila?

Tukwila's. The work address controls, so you are owed $21.65 for those shifts, not Seattle's $21.30. In this one case the commute pays you.

Does Seattle still have a lower rate for small businesses?

No. Seattle eliminated its employer-size tiers, and every employer in the city owes the same $21.30 in 2026. Tips and medical benefit payments no longer count toward it.

Why is SeaTac's rate lower than Seattle's if it covers the airport?

It was written for hospitality and transportation employers specifically, and has indexed up more slowly than surrounding cities. SeaTac jobs outside those industries are not covered by the city ordinance at all.
